The U.S. Census has just released the complete turnout data from all states. The charts below show the complete 2022 Midterm Election turnout and voter registration from all major Hispanic states. Unfortunately, turnout among Hispanics/Latinos suffered a setback in the 2022 Midterms, dropping to 37.9%, which is lower than the 40.3% turnout in the 2018 Midterms.
Although most Southwestern states performed better than the national average of 37.9%, with a turnout rate of around 40% or higher, Nevada’s turnout was disappointingly the lowest in the Southwest at 32.1%, down from 38% in 2018. Similarly, Arizona’s turnout decreased by eight percentage points from 48.8% in 2018 to 40% in 2022. New Mexico was the only state that improved turnout by 2 points from 2018, while California’s Latino turnout dropped by 1.5 percentage points.
While there could be various hypotheses to explain the decrease in voting among Latinos in 2022, it’s worth noting that leading up to the Midterms, polls and surveys indicated low enthusiasm among Latino voters.
